Melodyne editions

Melodyne comes in four different editions, the smallest being Melodyne essential and the largest Melodyne studio. All of them use the same algorithms and tone generation technology; they differ only in the range of functions offered. All editions share the following features:

Note-based, musical operation: Melodyne identifies the individual notes within an audio file and understands the place of each within the overall musical context. Thanks to its intuitive operation, it affords you easy access to every detail of every note, giving you an incomparable degree of control over the performance.

Fine-tuning note assignments: Although as a rule the musical analysis of your recordings and samples is highly accurate, instances may occur where the material is ambiguous and Melodyne hasn’t quite interpreted it as you would wish. Fortunately, this is easily remedied: You can edit and fine-tune Melodyne’s interpretation to your heart’s content, until it tallies exactly with your own.

Algorithms for melodic, percussive and complex audio material: Edit vocals, instruments, drums, drones … Versatility is one of Melodyne’s greatest strengths.

Intelligent macros for pitch, timing and volume: Intelligent macros make remedying defects and enhancing recordings a simple, fast and intuitive task, reducing to a bare minimum the number of clicks required.

Chord functions: The Chord Grid and Chord Track let you work with exceptional speed and efficiency. If you want, Melodyne will even identify the chords for you.

You’re always given a choice: Melodyne never alters your material automatically. You’re the one in control at all times. With the power to shape every facet of every note in an intuitive and musical fashion.

macOS and Windows: You can run every edition either as a stand-alone application or as a plug-in (VST3, AU, AAX). DAW integration using ARA Audio Random Access is especially user-friendly.

All editions are compatible with one other: A project begun in Melodyne essential can be opened later in Melodyne studio and edited using the larger function set of the more powerful edition. By the same token, a project edited using Melodyne studio can be opened and played back in Melodyne essential with all the earlier edits faithfully reproduced. However, if you wish to do any further editing there, it will be using the more limited function set of Melodyne essential.

For upgrades, you only pay the difference: If you want to start with one of the smaller editions and upgrade to a larger one later – no problem. And you won’t pay a cent more at the end of the day than if you’d bought the larger edition in the first place.

Melodyne essential

Even if you wish to do nothing more than make minor corrections to your vocals from time to time, there’s no need to dispense with Melodyne. Because Melodyne essential – besides being extremely easy to use – offers the same Grammy Award-winning sound quality as the larger editions.

In addition to the features listed above, Melodyne essential offers:

All the algorithms except DNA: This means you can edit monophonic vocal and instrumental tracks, as well as drums, and even entire mixes (by time-stretching or transposing them, for instance). All that’s missing is the ability to edit individual notes played by polyphonic instruments such as the piano or guitar.

Melodyne’s Main Tool: With the Main Tool, you can edit each note’s pitch, timing and duration as well as note separations. This – combined with the macros for pitch, timing and dynamics – allows you to make simple improvements fast, without having to deal with the more advanced functions.

In a nutshell: Melodyne essential is the easy-access point of entry to Melodyne’s unique editing environment – with the option of upgrading to a larger edition at any time, for only the difference in the price of the two editions.

Melodyne assistant

If you want to perform vocal editing at the highest level, refining and enhancing every aspect of musical expression, however subtle, Melodyne assistant has the very features you need.

In addition to Melodyne’s basic functions and all the possibilities of the smallest edition, essential, Melodyne assistant offers:

The entire Melodyne toolkit: With the full diversity of Melodyne’s tools at your disposal, you can apply the finest of touches to any and every note parameter: intonation, vibrato, pitch drift, timing, duration, amplitude, fades, sibilants, formants, transients – even the timing within notes as well as the transition between them – and much else besides. You can take a vocal track as close to perfection as you choose to.

Inspectors: In the inspectors, all the parameters are clearly laid out, and you can adjust them – without changing tools – to the precise values you want.

Audio-to-MIDI: Export the MIDI equivalent of your audio, so you can double your vocal lines with a synthesizer or your acoustic bass with an electronic sound. Audio-to-MIDI gives you the means to conduct exciting experiments and create radically new sounds.

In a nutshell: Melodyne assistant provides all you need for the professional editing of vocals. That’s where its main power is focused, but it can be used equally well, of course, to edit recordings of any monophonic sound source (trumpet, clarinet, etc.).

Melodyne editor

Melodyne editor employs the patented DNA algorithms that allow you to edit any instrument track or sample and reshape it musically in any way you like. You can change not only tempos, rhythms and melodies but also the harmonic structure of the music.

In addition to all the functions of the smaller editions, Melodyne editor offers you:

DNA Direct Note Access: Melodyne’s unique DNA algorithms give you access to individual notes within chords, so you can not only correct wrong notes in piano or guitar recordings but also adapt samples of all kinds to match the harmonies of your project, introduce any number of variations and even “recompose” samples altogether to create something new.

Edit chords: Thanks to DNA, you can correct and perfect the performance of individual notes within chords employing Melodyne’s entire arsenal of tools and macros – or even change the chord itself by adding, subtracting or changing the pitch of individual notes. Add fades, shift formants, improve timing, control vibrato … the possibilities are endless. You decide which notes sound and exactly how they sound – right down to the very last detail.

Samples play along with the song: Thanks to the Chord Grid and Melodyne’s ability to identify the chords, you can, with very little effort, make rigid loops come alive and adapt elegantly to the changing harmonies of the song.

Encyclopedic scale functions: Thanks to its astonishing flexibility in the handling of scales, temperaments and tunings, Melodyne is at home in all the world’s musical genres. It recognizes even the most exotic scales as well as letting you define your own.

Advanced tempo functions: You can edit tempos and tempo progressions with the same musical sensitivity as notes. Synchronize overdubs to tempo fluctuations in a live performance or, if you prefer, eliminate these altogether.

In a nutshell: Melodyne editor is also perfect for vocals. But even more remarkably, with this edition you can edit polyphonic instruments like the piano or the guitar and samples of all kinds. With Melodyne editor, you can take ordinary library samples and turn them into something unique, perfectly tailored to the rhythm, tempos and harmonies of your entire song.

Melodyne studio

Melodyne studio is the largest edition, designed for professionals working with multiple tracks. Also, in the field of sound design Melodyne studio opens up new vistas with its unique function set.

In addition to all the functions of the smaller editions, Melodyne studio offers:

Multi-tracking: You can access all your DAW’s Melodyne tracks in a single window and display as many tracks as you like simultaneously in the Note Editor. So with backing vocals or choral works, for example, you have a clear view of the entire musical context and can edit related tracks together.

Multitrack Note Editing: In the Note Editor, you can make any selection of notes from the displayed tracks and edit them simultaneously. Transcending track boundaries. Using all the tools. Ideal for bringing backing vocals, for instance, into tighter alignment, changing their harmonic structure or improving their voice-leading – as effortlessly as if they were all on the same track.

Track-transcending macros: Intelligent macros let you enhance or perfect simultaneously the intonation, timing and dynamics of any selection of notes on any number of tracks.

Quantize to a reference track: With the Quantize Time macro, you can use the timing of one track as a reference for the quantization of others, turning a ragged ensemble into something tight and disciplined in next to no time.

The Sound Editor: Melodyne knows the overtone structure of every single note, and the access the Melodyne Sound Editor gives you to the timbre of your voices and instruments is just as far-reaching. Ranging from ingenious overtone macros to an exceptionally musical EQ, morphing and much else besides, the sound design possibilities are unique.
